Attorney Fees

An overview of our attorney fees is set out below. We will propose a fee arrangement suited to the nature and scale of your matter, so please feel free to contact us first.

Legal Consultation Fees

* If the initial consultation exceeds 30 minutes, the above fee will be charged for each additional 30-minute period. The same rate applies to second and subsequent consultations.

Retainer Fees and Success Fees (excluding consumption tax)

A retainer fee is payable when we accept a matter. A success fee is payable if, upon conclusion of the matter, you have obtained an economic benefit. In principle, the following standards apply; however, fees may vary depending on the nature and complexity of the matter.

* “Economic benefit” means the specific amount in dispute in the matter. For example, if a lawsuit is filed to collect a claim of JPY 3 million, the economic benefit is JPY 3 million, and the retainer fee is JPY 240,000 (excluding consumption tax).

* For the purpose of the success fee, “economic benefit” means the benefit actually obtained upon conclusion of the matter. For example, if JPY 2.5 million is awarded on a claim of JPY 3 million, the economic benefit is JPY 2.5 million, and the success fee is JPY 400,000 (excluding consumption tax). The same applies where you are sued for JPY 3 million and are ultimately required to pay only JPY 500,000.

Time Charge

Instead of retainer and success fees, we can also bill on a time-charge basis according to the actual hours worked. This arrangement is well suited to matters whose outcomes are difficult to quantify, such as corporate legal work, advisory work and international transactions. Rates are set individually upon consultation.
